GasBuddy is a Boston-based technology company that operates apps and websites that find real-time fuel prices at over 140,000 gas stations in the United States and Canada. Through their B2B initiatives, they also sell software to convenience store owners (formerly known as OpenStore).
The GasBuddy app is a GPS-based smartphone and tablet application program that provides prices of nearby gas stations based on user-submitted data, as well as through partnerships with other companies and directly from station operators. The GasBuddy application is available on Android, iOS, and Windows.
Using GasBuddy
GasBuddy does not require registration. When you launch the app, you can immediately begin searching for gas prices. At first glance, the app will also show you the average gas price and whether prices are rising or falling.
Simply click the prominently displayed Find Gas Near Me icon or enter a location or zip code in the search field provided.
If this is your first time using GasBuddy, you must grant access to your location. GasBuddy requires this in order to provide you with location-specific gas prices. You can allow location access always or only while using the app. Choosing Always gives you the most functionality, allowing GasBuddy to send you the most up-to-date information.
Note: To provide users with the most up-to-date gas prices, GasBuddy relies on the social aspect of user reports. When the gas price was last updated by a user is displayed next to each gas price.
Features
You have the option of viewing gas prices. By distance, cost, or top tier.
- Distance: This feature displays gas prices starting with the closest gas station to you.
- Price: Filtering by price returns gas prices that are the lowest near you.
- Top Tier: Selecting this option displays gas stations in your area that only sell top-tier gas. The amount of detergent added to gasoline, which can affect emissions and vehicle performance, is referred to as top tier. This filter displays gas stations that avoid using low-quality gas.
You can view prices by list or map under each of these filters, allowing you to view the information in the format that is most useful to you. Also, unless you change it, the default information you see is for Regular gas. This setting can be easily changed by selecting the Fuel Type button at the bottom of the screen.
You can earn points for reporting gas prices if you sign up for GasBuddy. There are also daily and weekly challenges available. Your participation in the app allows you to earn leaderboard points, which you can then use to enter free gas drawings. And who doesn’t appreciate free gas?
Signing up for GasBuddy
If you decide to sign up for GasBuddy, the process is simple. Simply follow these easy steps.
- Choose Sign Up. GasBuddy can be accessed through your email address, Facebook login, or Google account.
- Enter your email address or verify your authorization. If you use a third-party login, you must give the site permission to continue using your identity. Enter your email address instead.
- Choose a nickname. Other GasBuddy users will see this as your username.
- Enter your country’s name.
- Enter your postal code.
- Select a GasBuddy password.
- Accept the Service Terms.
Congratulations! You have signed up for GasBuddy.

How to save money on gas with GasBuddy
The GasBuddy app can help you save money on gas in a variety of ways. Here are the top three (3).
Find the best gas prices near you
The GasBuddy app displays gas prices at all nearby stations to assist you in finding the best deal on gas. Simply download the mobile app and allow it to detect your current location. You’ll see a list of all nearby gas stations in the center of the screen, along with their prices. You can choose which fuel type you want to buy and how far you’re willing to drive for gas by using the filtering options at the top of the screen.
There’s also a map view where you can find gas stations close to you, as well as their prices.
Tap on a gas station to see the prices for each type of gas available. Prices may not always be accurate because GasBuddy relies on crowdsourcing for pricing data. GasBack can be redeemed for gas purchases made with Pay with GasBuddy.
To earn rewards, open the GasBuddy app before making an online purchase and select the Savings tab. Then, look for and tap on your merchant. Tap the Shop Now button at the bottom of the screen to continue shopping online. After the merchant confirms the purchase, GasBack will be credited to your account.
Always compare your GasBack earnings to the cash back or points you’d get from another shopping portal. For example, if Rakuten offers more cash back (or American Express Membership Rewards points) than the GasBack portal, it may make sense to earn with them. Using Pay with GasBuddy to save on every gallon
You can save even more money if you pay with GasBuddy. When you sign up for this service, you’ll receive a prepaid gas card that you can use at a variety of gas stations across the country. This card is linked to your checking account and will withdraw funds to cover your purchase each time you fill up at the pump.
You’ll save money per gallon of gas you pump, and your savings will vary depending on where you pump. As shown in the screenshot above, free members can save up to 25 cents per gallon.
Enrolling in GasBuddy Premium can save you up to 40 cents per gallon. This service costs $9.99 per month and guarantees a savings of at least $20 per gallon (up to 50 gallons per month). You also have access to Allstate’s 24-hour roadside assistance and exclusive GasBack offers (more on that soon).
Sign up for Pay with GasBuddy on the app or the website. Create an account and apply for the card; it should arrive in the mail in about a week. You must provide information such as your address, date of birth, and full name. You must also link a bank account.

Open the app and scroll through the list of participating gas stations to see how much you’ll save with Pay with GasBuddy. Above stations that accept Pay with GasBuddy and offer a discount, you’ll see “Deal Alerts” in red. As seen in the first screenshot of the 76 stations, the discount is listed next to the label.
Tap the station’s name and then the “Activate Discount” button at the bottom of the screen to activate the discount (as shown in the second screenshot).
Swipe your GasBuddy card when you arrive at the station. Your checking account will be charged for the amount of the gas purchase less the discount is shown in the app.
