The King of Romania was the official title of the leader from 1881 until 1947 when Romania was proclaimed a republic by the communist authorities.

Short history
The Romanian state was called the United Romanian Principalities until 1862, after the Little Union of 1859 of the vassal states of the Ottoman Sultanate, Wallachia (Wallachian Principality) and Moldavia (Principality of Moldavia), under Alexander John I Cuza as prince. Cuza became both Prince of Wallachia and Prince of Moldavia in 1859. From 1862, the Romanian State took the name of Principality of Romania, and Cuza took the title of Prince of Romania. He was dethroned in 1866 by the Parliament, which then invited a German prince from the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family, Carol, to become the new Prince of Romania.
