Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, 3 km (2 miles) west of Amesbury. Stonehenge consists of a ring of obelisks, each approximately 4.1 m high, 2.1 m wide, and weighing approximately 25 tons. The stones are in the middle of the densest complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England. Although it is still not known exactly why the Stonehenge monument was built, it has been determined that there were religious structures around it in the past.

Archaeologists believe this Stonehenge monument was built between 3000 BC and 2000 BC. According to estimates, the circular embankment and ditch, which form the earliest phase of the Stonehenge monument, were shaped in 3100 BC. Radiocarbon dating shows that the first Bluestones were found between 2400 BC and 2200 BC. However, it is possible that they may have been seen as early as 3000 BC. One of the most famous buildings in the UK, Stonehenge is considered a British cultural icon. Stonehenge has been a legally protected Ancient Monument since 1882 when the historic monuments law was first successfully enacted in England. The Stonehenge monument, the site, and its surroundings were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1986. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage; the National Trust owns the surrounding land.

The earliest known structures in the nearby area are estimated to be large pine totem-like columns within four or five pits, three of which were erected during the Mesolithic period between 8500 and 7000 BC. How these inscriptions relate to the later Stonehenge monument is unknown.

Much of southern England is currently covered in woodland, while the limestone plateau in Stonehenge is an unusually open space. This may be why the early Neolithic site is located in this area.

It is possible that structures such as the Heel Stone and the mound known as the North Mound were the first components of Stonehenge, but the earliest known major event is the construction of a circular moat with inner and outer barriers around 3000 BC. These structures surrounded an area of about 100 meters in diameter and had two entrances.

By 2500 BC, the stones were standing in the center of the monument. Two types of stones were used at Stonehenge: large sarsens and small bluestones.
